Antares
We had sky lanterns at our wedding that wasn’t even a
real wedding and in the movie Melancholia they have
sky lanterns at their wedding too and afterwards it is the
end of the world (sorry if I have spoiled it for you) our
lanterns went up into the sky as if they were literal wishes
then later on we wonder what we wished for and whether
it was the right thing and if it will be the end of the world.
I can tell you with confidence all of the lanterns are just
symbolic and if you want you can write your very own
messages to the universe on them we wrote no messages
but have still one unused lantern left as if the universe or
the end of the world would pay attention to that even if we
did write upon it if we did send it up there but how could it?
How could it though unused under the bed in a little box
fifteen years after the fact; paper and combustible material
and a frame flying up pretty to the atmosphere and landing
in the sea where precious wildlife might die entangled in it
or landing on the land where it might start an enormous fire
plus armageddon. Maybe not as a direct result but surely
eventually that it’d be a shame to waste it though we did not
consummate our not-real marriage that night instead we
argued strongly on our honeymoon and had nontraditional
sex on an island that used to be reserved just for convicts and
there are almost no roads at all so you have to go everywhere
by boat which is lovely and like some kind of paradise.
